Campus Community Celebrates 10th Anniversary of Usdan University Center

On Sept. 7, the Wesleyan community celebrated the tenth anniversary of the opening of Usdan University Center.

“Usdan is Wesleyan’s central gathering location for students, staff, faculty and the larger community,” said Frank Marsilli, facility and events manager for Usdan. “It’s a place where the campus community comes together—whether that be for a meeting, program or meal. We’re proud to celebrate a decade of success!”

During the daylong celebration and open house, students were offered a “passport,” encouraging them to visit various areas of the facility and receive a stamp. The event also included a prize wheel at the Usdan info desk; updated “did you know” signs and fun facts posted throughout the facility; movies and music from 2007; and a display highlighting the growth of student centers and involvement on campus through the years.

The Wesleyan Writers Conference celebrated its 59th year by welcoming more than 60 new and seasoned writers and others interested in the writer’s craft to the Wesleyan campus June 10-14.

The Wesleyan Writers Conference has been useful to writers at different stages of their careers.

Headed by Wesleyan Writers Conference Director Anne Greene, adjunct professor of English and director of Writing Programs, the conference featured seminars, workshops, readings, panel discussions and manuscript consultations led by Wesleyan faculty and other nationally known writers, editors and agents.

Conference topics included the novel, short story, poetry, nonfiction, memoir, biography, journalism, writing for film and TV, new media, writing about food and travel, writing about science and medicine, preparing your work for publication, and how to sell your work.

Wesleyan’s vegan fare continues to impress voters and critics: collegemagazine.org has named the school the ninth best vegan campus nationwide, and Wesleyan is looking to reach the final round in the People’s Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) “March Madness”-style voting contest.

According to collegemagazine.org:

Wesleyan not only boasts its history of social justice activism, but also a wide range of mouth-watering vegan foods. Veggie chicken red curry is just one of these fine meals. Let your senses run wild with Bon Appétit, the campus’ food supplier. Their navy bean soup, garden burger and steamed parsnips will have you running back for more. Even better, Bon Appétit serves vegan options all day, every day.

As of March 16, Wesleyan has a commanding lead over Shippensburg University in PETA’s small school vegan cuisine contest. Wesleyan looks to reach the final round where it will potentially face Warren Wilson College, which has a small lead over Oberlin College.

Wesleyan Employees Artwork on Display in Usdan

Cupcake Cup Raises Funds for Student Organization

University Relations held a "Tuition Transition" celebration March 26 in Usdan University Center to thank alumni and parent donors for their financial support.

The ever-popular Wesleyan Cardinal made an appearance at the event.

A tuition grant from alumni and parents through the Wesleyan Fund, along with the endowment, reduces tuition, room and board charges by nearly $20,000 per student every year.

Panel Discussion to Focus on Health Care Reform

The Usdan Common Connections Committee will host “Critical Condition,” a panel discussion focusing on the current efforts to reform the health care system in the United States, at 7 p.m. March 24 in the Daniel Family Commons, Usdan University Center.

Much of President Obama’s first year in office and the first year of the Democrat-controlled Congress has been focused on changes to the health care system aimed at expanding care to the uninsured and lowering costs. Both the Senate and the House of Representatives passed their own bills and on Sunday, March 21, the House of Representatives approved the Senate bill. A reconciliation of the Senate bill has also been approved by the House and sent to the Senate.
