Ma ’17 Exhibits Painting Thesis at Freeman Gallery

Paintings by Jiaqi Maria Ma ’17 are on exhibit at the Freeman Center for East Asian Studies Gallery. Ma, pictured at right, created the paintings for her Wesleyan thesis titled (BEIJING | 北京).

On Sept. 20, Ma presented an artist’s talk inside the gallery. (BEIJING | 北京) consists of a series of five paintings based on her experiences living in Beijing. “I feel as though I made my memories real by building my own city through the process of painting,” she said. Ma, a Freeman Asian Scholar, double majored in classical studies and studio art and minored in archaeology.

The student-curated exhibit Draw Yourself In is on display in the College of East Asian Studies’ gallery through Dec. 9. Featuring some of the Mansfield Freeman Center’s finest works, Draw Yourself In is an audience-participation exhibit and gallery-goers are encouraged to reimagine the exhibited works in new forms and mediums.

The Mansfield Freeman Center for East Asian Studies Gallery is hosting an exhibit titled “Faces of China, 1981” through Dec. 6.

During the show’s opening on Sept. 11, Patrick Dowdey, curator of the Freeman Center for East Asian Studies Gallery, introduced the photographer, Tom Zetterstrom.

Wesleyan’s Center for East Asian Studies is hosting an exhibit titled “Provincial Elegance” April 4 through May 27 in the Mansfield Freeman Gallery. The exhibit features Chinese antiques donated in honor of Houghton “Buck” Freeman ‘43 and his wife, Doreen. Patrick Dowdey, curator of the Freeman Gallery, spoke about the individual antiques during the show’s opening April 4.

In this video, Artist-in-Residence Keiji Shinohara introduces “A Late Christmas Gift: Contemporary Prints from Japan” at the Mansfield Freeman Center for East Asian Studies on Feb. 1. The 46 prints in this exhibition represent a wide range of contemporary Japanese printmakers, from established artists to graduate students and includes works in all print media. Shinohara is an internationally known woodblock printer who has been at Wesleyan for almost 20 years.

East Asian Studies Celebrates Freeman Family Garden with Exhibit

Patrick Dowdey, curator of the Freeman Center for East Asian Studies, adjunct professor of East Asian Studies and anthropology, welcomed guests to the opening of "Shoyoan: Celebrating the Freeman Family Garden" March 31 in the Freeman Gallery. The exhibition features photographs, poetry and video that celebrate time and season in Wesleyan's Freeman Family Garden and Tatami Room.
