Dupuy: Pledges by New Haitian President ‘Empty’

In a recent article in The Miami Herald, Alex Dupuy, Chair, African American Studies, Class of 1958 Distinguished Professor of Sociology, says that the new Haitian president, former pop star Michel Martelly, will face a reality check now that he’s reached office. Martelly won the election on a wave of pledges, including building 2,000 houses a week, introduction of free schooling, and the recreation of Haiti’s army. However, Dupuy says these are empty, unrealistic pledges, and that “given Martelly’s inexperience and Haiti’s challenges, ‘the only constant in all of this is what the international community wants.'”
